DPO told to arrest ‘blasphemy’ killings planner

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif has directed the Sheikhupura district police officer (DPO) to arrest the mastermind behind the killing of a factory owner and his security guard over alleged desecration of Quranic verses. On Friday, the DPO informed the court that five accused had been arrested, while the mastermind Moulvi Shabber was still at large. The CJ took suo motu notice of the incident in which a mob, including factory workers, attacked a leather-processing unit near Muridke after the alleged desecration of Quranic verses. According to police, the incident took place when the owner of East Leather Factory, Khatiala Virkan, Mian Najib allegedly removed the Islamic calendar on the factory wall and burnt it. The workers staged a protest demonstration and along with hundreds of people attacked the factory, killing the owner and a security guard and injuring several others. staff report
